Brooke Freeman (Marsden) is a study in fire and ice. She cultivates a cool sophistication and quiet assertiveness that recalls Hitchcock blondes like Grace Kelly or Kim Novak.
Brooke initially comes to Shortland Street as a locum GP. She is only recently qualified, but gives every impression of being competent, confident and ambitious.
The truth is that Brooke finds general practice a chore, and sometimes struggles to maintain her professional fasade through the minor coughs and aches and pains.
However, she wants the experience on her CV and is resigned to part-time GP work for a few more years, while she completes her GP consultancy training and specialises in dermatology.
When not working as a locum GP, Brooke works in various local cosmetic clinics, mostly doing botox, liposuction and laser skin treatments.
It's boring, but lucrative work, and Brooke plans to one day open her own cosmetic clinic - and make some serious money. The siren call of the sexy seductress has been the downfall of men since Eve first winked at Adam. So imagine, if you will, a blonde tigress with bedroom eyes giving you the come hit her during your morning smoko.
Such is the dilemma faced by the male cast of Shortland Street when first confronted with flirty, two-faced Dr Brooke Freeman, played by newcomer Beth Allen. Brooke's angelic looks hide a ruthless personality she won't hesitate to lie her way out of sticky situations.
Brooke has already sunk her claws into the perpetually single Dr Kip Denton, gone out on a few dates with Chris Warner, attracted the attention of lesbian nurse Maia Jeffries and appears to be carrying on a secret affair with new surgeon and dark horse Ethan Pierce. Brooke is never seen without full makeup, straight hair, tight clothes and a mysterious smile. Everywhere she goes, men follow, like wafts of cheap perfume. The ambitious Brooke continues her plans to become the new lady of the Warner house. As well as being a capable Doctor, Brooke is quickly revealing herself to be a talented manipulator when it comes to getting what she wants.
Brooke feels her romance with Chris hampered by his son, Harry. The relationship eventually unravelles and Brooke turns to old lover Dr Ethan Pierce for comfort. Ethan rejects Brooke's advances, and several days later, he is shot by an unidentified assassin. Brooke has since been questioned by the cops - was this a crime of passion?
Brooke has been in the spotlight of, facing suspicion and mistrust over the murder of Ethan Pierce. With many colleagues convinced that Brooke fired the fatal shot which killed the devious Dr Pierce, she finds herself with few friends. At a party thrown for Yvonne Jeffries, Brooke arrives to find herself ostracised and left on the perimeter of the festivities.
However one person believes in her innocence and isn't afraid to offer the outcast a friendly face - Kieran Mitchell. As a defiant Brooke accepts Kieran's offer to dance, tongues begin to wag. Brooke is questioned by the cops but her alibi stands firm.
Brooke's father Grant Marsden comes back to Ferndale. Brooke and her mother were abandoned by him when Brooke was a teenager.
He was convicted of insider trading and then escaped off shore, leaving Brooke and her mother penniless.
Brooke was always convinced that he had money overseas which he kept from them so her friend (and some-time lover) Kieran Mitchell helps her pull off a scam to claim back some of her father's hidden fortune.
Brooke now also becomes the Head of Departement (HOD) at the Primary Care Clinic.
Ever since she became HOD in the PCC, icy blonde Brooke Freeman has revelled in
keeping fellow GP TK Samuels on the back foot. Piling him up with her work,
taking the glory for his initiatives and undermining his popularity with his
patients are all in a day's work for Brooke.
But Brooke has been saving
her masterstroke - jealous of TK's reputation in the PCC, she's
determined to manage him right out the door. Having the ear of gullible CEO
Callum McKay makes her task easier, but TK's not going anywhere without a fight.
The scene is set for a doozy of a showdown, but who will emerge the winner?
